iOS 27 hotspot not working? What changed and how to fix it

Every year a new iOS version arrives, and every year a wave of people find their Personal Hotspot suddenly acting up right after they update. iOS 27 is no exception. If your hotspot stopped working, started dropping more often, or greyed out entirely after installing iOS 27, you’re in the right place.

Here’s the honest summary up front: the core reason iPhone hotspots drop has not changed in iOS 27. iOS still powers down the cellular radio when your phone goes idle, which kills the connection for any device tethered to it. That behavior has been in place since iOS 14 and no major release, including this one, has removed it. What iOS 27 did bring, like every X.0 release before it, is a fresh batch of temporary hotspot bugs that hit a subset of users after updating. This guide covers both.

Did iOS 27 change how Personal Hotspot works?

For the everyday user, no meaningful change. Personal Hotspot still lives in Settings → Personal Hotspot, still shares your cellular data over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB, and still supports up to five simultaneous Wi-Fi connections. The setup is identical to previous versions. If you know how to turn it on from iOS 18, you know how to turn it on in iOS 27. Our full setup guide applies unchanged.

The one thing people most want changed, the connection dropping when the phone is idle, is still there. We’ll come back to that, because it’s the single most common reason people search for hotspot help after any update.

If Apple ships a genuine change to hotspot behavior in a later iOS 27 point release, we’ll update this article. As of the initial rollout, the fundamentals are the same.

The perennial problem iOS 27 did not fix: idle radio sleep

This is the big one, and it’s worth understanding because it explains most “iOS 27 hotspot keeps dropping” complaints.

When your iPhone screen turns off and you stop touching the device, iOS marks the cellular radio as idle and starts powering it down to save battery. The Wi-Fi network your hotspot broadcasts is still visible, so your connected laptop still shows “connected,” but no actual data gets through. Within seconds, the laptop shows “no internet.”

This is a deliberate power-management decision Apple has kept across every iOS version since iOS 14. There is no built-in setting, in iOS 27 or any prior version, to keep the radio awake during a hotspot session. People upgrade hoping the new version fixed it. It did not, because Apple treats it as intended behavior, not a bug.

We wrote a full technical breakdown in why your iPhone hotspot keeps disconnecting. The short version: the only reliable fix is an app that uses the background location API to keep the cellular radio responsive, which is exactly what Hotspot Hero does. It works identically on iOS 27 as it did on iOS 18, because it relies on the Core Location significant-location-changes API that Apple has kept stable for over a decade.

Common iOS 27 hotspot bugs after updating

Separate from the radio sleep, every major iOS release breaks Personal Hotspot for some users in the first few weeks. iOS 16.0, 17.0, and 18.0 all had documented hotspot regressions that Apple patched in the X.1 or X.2 update. iOS 27 follows the same pattern. Here are the issues showing up most often after the update, and what fixes each.

Personal Hotspot greyed out or missing after the iOS 27 update

A classic post-update symptom. The update sometimes leaves your carrier profile in a stale state, and Personal Hotspot greys out or vanishes from Settings entirely.

Fix, in order:

  1. Restart the iPhone. This alone clears many post-update glitches.
  2. Toggle your line off and on: Settings → Cellular → tap your line → turn it off, wait 10 seconds, turn it back on. This forces iOS to pull a fresh carrier profile.
  3. If it’s still greyed out, reset network settings: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings. Have your Wi-Fi passwords ready, because this clears saved networks.

We have a dedicated guide covering all seven reasons Personal Hotspot greys out if none of the above works.

Hotspot connects but there’s no internet after iOS 27

Your laptop joins the hotspot, but pages won’t load. After an update this is usually one of two things:

  • Stale APN or carrier settings. The update didn’t fully re-provision your carrier profile. Reset network settings (step 3 above) forces a clean pull.
  • The iPhone is tethering from Wi-Fi instead of cellular. If your iPhone is itself on a Wi-Fi network, turn Wi-Fi off on the iPhone so the hotspot shares the cellular connection instead.

Hotspot password not working after iOS 27

Some users find their saved hotspot password stops connecting devices after the update. The fix is on the connecting device: forget the network and rejoin with the current password from Settings → Personal Hotspot → Wi-Fi Password. Full details in our Personal Hotspot password guide.

Hotspot drops even faster on iOS 27

A few users report the idle drop happening quicker after updating. This usually traces to Low Power Mode being re-enabled by the update, or a battery-optimization setting reset. Check that Low Power Mode is off in Settings → Battery while tethering. It throttles background activity, including the cellular radio, and makes the idle drop worse.

Should you update to iOS 27 if you rely on hotspot?

If Personal Hotspot is critical to your daily workflow, the cautious approach with any X.0 release is to wait for the X.1 patch, which typically arrives two to four weeks after the initial release and fixes the early regressions. That said, the update is safe for most people, and the issues above are all fixable.

The one thing to know: updating to iOS 27 will not fix the fundamental hotspot dropping problem if that’s why you’re considering it. The idle radio sleep is unchanged. If dropping is your issue, the fix is a stability app, not an OS update.

How to keep your hotspot stable on iOS 27

Regardless of which iOS version you’re on, the reliable fix for the dropping problem is the same:

  1. Make sure Personal Hotspot is on in iOS Settings.
  2. Open Hotspot Hero, tap Start, and grant the Location: Always permission when iOS asks.
  3. Connect your laptop, console, or tablet, then lock your phone and use it normally.

The green status badge reads Active when the wake mechanism is running. The app keeps the cellular radio responsive in the background so your connection survives the idle sleep. It uses no mobile data of its own, has roughly the battery cost of a navigation app idle in the background, and never reads or transmits your location. It works the same on iOS 27 as every version back to iOS 14.

Frequently asked questions

Did iOS 27 fix the Personal Hotspot dropping problem?

No. iOS 27 did not change the idle radio sleep that causes hotspots to drop when the iPhone is not in use. That behavior has been consistent since iOS 14. There is still no built-in setting to keep the radio awake during a hotspot session. The reliable fix remains an app that uses background location updates to keep the radio responsive.

Why did my hotspot stop working after updating to iOS 27?

Major iOS updates sometimes leave the carrier profile in a stale state, which greys out Personal Hotspot or breaks the connection. Restart the iPhone, toggle your cellular line off and on, and if needed reset network settings. These clear the post-update glitch for most people.

Is Personal Hotspot different in iOS 27?

Functionally, no. It’s in the same place (Settings → Personal Hotspot), works the same way over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB, and still allows up to five simultaneous connections. The setup and everyday use are identical to iOS 18.

Should I wait for iOS 27.1 before updating if I use hotspot?

If Personal Hotspot is critical to your work, waiting for the X.1 patch is the cautious choice, since it fixes the early regressions that hit some users after any X.0 release. For most people the update is fine, and the common post-update hotspot issues are all fixable.

Will Hotspot Hero work on iOS 27?

Yes. Hotspot Hero uses the Core Location significant-location-changes API, which Apple has kept stable across every iOS release since iOS 11. It works identically on iOS 27 as on previous versions. Apple has not deprecated or restricted the mechanism it relies on.

Does iOS 27 use more data on hotspot?

No. The amount of data your hotspot uses depends entirely on what your connected devices do, not the iOS version. If you want to estimate your monthly usage against your carrier’s hotspot cap, our data usage calculator gives a tight estimate.

The bottom line

iOS 27 is a normal iOS release for hotspot users: no fundamental change to how Personal Hotspot works, no fix for the idle dropping problem, and the usual crop of temporary post-update bugs that clear with a restart, a line toggle, or a network settings reset. If your specific issue is the connection dropping when the phone is idle, that’s the perennial problem no iOS version has solved, and the fix is Hotspot Hero, not the update.
